The New York State Pavilion is a historic world's fair pavilion at Flushing MeadowsCorona Park in Flushing, Queens, New York. The New York State Pavilion was designed for the 1964 New York World's Fair by architects Philip Johnson and Lev Zetlin, and built between 1962 and 1964.
The pavilion consists of three components of reinforced concrete and steel construction: the "Tent of Tomorrow", Observation Towers, and "Theaterama".
The "Tent of Tomorrow" is elliptical in plan, and its sixteen 100-foot reinforced concrete piers once supported the largest cable suspension roof in the world. The main floor of the Tent was a large scale design of a Texaco highway map of New York State, made of terrazzo. An idea floated after the fair to use the floor for the World Trade Center didn't materialize. Once the red ceiling tiles were removed from the pavilion in the late 1970s, the terrazzo floor was subject to the elements of weather and was ruined.

Ed, I remember seeing this pavilion at the Worlds Fair grounds the first time I visited back in 1964. (how could a half century seem so brief)? I have never seen it like this! Fantastic!!! And as usual, I learn so much from your educational and informative descriptions, which I like to read in their entirety. Its amazing that all the effort and creativity that went into building a world's fair of such epic and diverse quality, was just a temporary display that lasted a mere 2 years, and then is knocked down like children's play blocks. Ed Weidman replied:
im glad you like this kellice, thank you:)it is a landmark that thankfully is finally going to be restored!it truly is amazing they spent all that money and artistry etc to create such a fabulous little city of countries from around the world,to just be gutted and destroyed:( even today we are still doing it to the historical stores in nyc and places that have been there for decades, to build more banks, duane reads and 7-11's,very sad.
